Compensators are attachments with baffles that redirect muzzle gas in an effort to combat recoil or drift. It does this by redirecting the gases in the opposing direction of weapon drift and recoil so that the gas counteracts the action of the weapon. This rare attachment, while of great benefit to DMRs, is of questionable use on the bolt-action rifles, given that the time between shots is sufficient enough for the shooter to readjust aim, but since there are no negative effects there is no net loss to attaching one while looking for other attachments.
- When attached to the SKS or Mk14 EBR, the compensator takes on the appearance of the Primary Weapon Systems FSC308 compensator, while the Mini-14 compensator is based on the Gemtech 5.56mm Quickmount flash hider.
- In reality, most compensators increase stability and decrease recoil at the cost of increasing the size of the muzzle blast and sound pressure of the gunshot. Linear compensators do not suffer from these issues as they redirect the high pressure gas forward at a reduced velocity.
